Vision and School Success | Hammonton Family Eyecare
Did you know that up to 80% of what your child learns in school is dependent on their vision? This is why it’s common for children with vision problems to be misdiagnosed with ADHD or other learning problems.
Prioritizing your child’s eye health will ensure that they develop well and succeed in the classroom. Additionally, they won’t be misdiagnosed and will get the help they need for their vision problems.
Statistics also show that 1 in 10 children have poor visual skills that impact their school and sports performance. Using our expert knowledge and cutting-edge technology, we can identify and address potential vision problems early on, ensuring that your child thrives both in and out of the classroom.
School Vision Screenings vs. Comprehensive Eye Exams for Children
School vision screenings only check for basic eye problems and abnormalities. Your child needs a comprehensive eye exam with a pediatric optometrist to ensure that their eyes are developing correctly and they have good visual skills.
They will be tested for binocularity, refractive errors, color vision, visual acuity, and overall eye health. This allows optometrists to spot potential vision problems early on, so that your child can thrive.
What is Assessed During a Pediatric Eye Exam?
During a pediatric eye exam, you can expect the pediatric optometrist at Hammonton Family Eyecare to thoroughly evaluate various aspects of your child’s vision. This includes using optical instruments to test for:
- Eye teaming
- Peripheral awareness
- Color perception
- Eye focusing
- Near and distance visual acuity
- Depth perception
How Often Should a Child Have an Eye Exam?
Your child should have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months old. This is to check that their vision is developing properly. After that, regular eye exams at age 3 and around age 5 are recommended.
Children who are in school should get an eye exam at least every two years if they don't have any vision problems. However, if your child wears eyeglasses or contact lenses, annual eye exams are recommended to ensure their vision is always at its best.
Glasses for Kids
At Hammonton Family Eyecare, we believe that children can enjoy wearing their glasses. Involving them in the selection process and allowing them to choose from a collection of stylish and kid-friendly options will encourage them to keep their glasses where they belong: on their face.
We offer glasses that are comfortable, durable, and come in a range of colors, shapes, and sizes.
Children who love sports can opt for athletic eyewear to protect their eyes from sports-related injuries.
So, if your child needs glasses, pay us a visit! We'll make sure they leave our office with a pair they'll be excited to wear.
Contact Lenses for Teens
As children get older, they get more self conscious. This is why teenagers may shy away from wearing glasses, even if they need vision correction.
Contact lenses might just be the answer to their problems! They’ll enhance your child's natural eye color while providing a level of freedom that glasses can't match.
Your child will be able to participate in sports, dance, and other activities without worrying about losing or breaking their glasses. They’ll also feel more confident and ready to conquer the world with clear and comfortable vision.
